Horror Movies of the 90s: Part One

Written by Emily Rokke

The horror movies of the 90s were awesome because they were fun and timely. They lacked that truly scary real life horror but had that comedic and entertaining tweak. Here are some of the best horror movies of the 90s.

The Scream series was fun, scary, and so good it turned into a trilogy. Then a fourth movie came out and a spin-off show, that was different from the first movies. Scream was a traditional slasher film turned self-aware and comedic, while still a slasher flick. Sydney is under attack by “ghost face” who terrorizes her and her friends. He kills along the way and as you can see by the sequels, his role is ever-changing. Scream was one of the highest grossing films of 1996 and is the highest grossing slasher film in the world. Everybody loves it.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

I Know What You Did Last Summer was similar to Scream with its style and cast of good-looking people. The movie had a second and third, too, making it a trilogy as well. The movie starts with an accident that four kids cause and then vow to keep secret. A year later, the kids start getting pulled back together with threatening letters and the return of their big secret. No one wants talk about it again, relive it, or deal with what they did, but now they must. This movie is noted along with Scream as the new type of comedic slashers of the 90s.

If you did not love these movies, than the “horror” movies of the 90s were not for you. As a tween, wanna be grown up but almost a teenager, I loved these movies. They would probably seem very different if watched now but what an era! Happy (almost) Halloween.
