Why Are so Many 90s Movie Remakes Terrible?

Written by Mr. 90s

You would think that good source material equals a good movie or at least it would on a consistent basis. That, however, has not been the case when it comes to 90s movie remakes an reboots. So many if these films are based on classics, yet they underwhelm or turn out just plain terrible.

The folks at IMDB.com put together a list of 90s remakes and it’s eye-opening. Classics like Total Recall and Flatliners (yes, you can debate whether that’s a classic) turned into dreadful redos that tanked at the box office. Others remakes that made the list include films like Dredd (a Judge Dredd) reboot and the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, movies that while not great, come from rich source material.

Even a hit remake like the recent Jumanji may have hit at the box office, but it’s hard to think of the new film as good (and we may be looking at the old one through nostalgia-covered glasses). Of course, this film being a hit means that every 90s project that can be updated and rebooted wiil be.

Here’s a look at what has already been announced: (The films with dates have already begun production.

Drop Dead Fred

Mulan (2020)
Aladdin (2019)
 The Lion King (2019)
